Apple Just Made AI Search the Default on a Billion iPhones: Is Your Business Visible?
Apple just made AI search the default on a billion iPhones. Most business websites are not ready for it.
At WWDC on June 8, Apple unveiled "Siri AI," a fully rebuilt assistant running on a custom version of Google's Gemini model inside Apple's Private Cloud Compute. The company is reportedly paying Google around $1 billion a year for it. iOS 27 also adds Extensions, which let users set Claude or Gemini as their default assistant instead of Siri. The phone in your customer's hand is now an AI answer engine by default.
This is not a future trend. It shipped this week. And it changes the single most important question a local business can ask: when someone looks for what you sell, does the AI recommend you, or does it skip you entirely?
The Shift From Ten Blue Links to One Answer
For twenty years, search meant a page of results. You scrolled, you compared, you clicked. The game was ranking high enough to get noticed.
That game is ending. When a customer asks their phone "who is the best HVAC company near me?" or "find me a personal injury lawyer in Boca," they are no longer handed a list. They get one confident recommendation, maybe two. The assistant reads the web, decides who is credible, and answers.
This is already happening at scale beyond Apple. Google's AI Overviews now appear in roughly 18% of all searches and reach about 2 billion people a month. ChatGPT crossed 900 million weekly active users earlier this year and processes hundreds of millions of search queries a week. Apple putting a Gemini-powered assistant on every new iPhone does not start this trend. It pours gasoline on it.
Why AI Recommendations Are Worth More Than Rankings
Here is the part most owners miss. AI search traffic does not just replace old traffic. It converts better.
Referral traffic from ChatGPT converts at around 14.2%, compared to 2.8% from conventional organic search. The reason is intent. When an AI recommends your business, it has effectively pre-qualified you. The customer is not comparison shopping ten tabs. They arrived believing you are the answer.
That is enormous leverage if you are the one being recommended. It is an existential problem if you are not. There is no "page two" of an AI answer. You are either in the recommendation or you are invisible.
Traditional SEO Will Not Get You There
The instinct is to call your SEO person and ask if you are "ranking." Wrong question. AI assistants do not rank pages the way Google's old algorithm did. They retrieve, read, and synthesize. They prefer content they can parse cleanly and trust.
This new discipline has a name: Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO. If SEO is about being found, GEO is about being understood. It rewards different things than the old playbook:
Clean, machine-readable structured data. Schema.org markup in JSON-LD gives AI systems explicit, unambiguous signals about who you are, what you offer, your location, hours, and services. Princeton research presented at KDD found that structured, optimization-aware content can produce visibility lifts of up to 40% in AI-generated answers.
Answer-first content with real evidence. Models prefer to cite pages with concrete statistics, clear claims, and authority signals over vague marketing copy. Factual precision is what gets you quoted.
Technical health. Fast, accessible, well-architected pages that a retrieval system can read without choking. A site built for human eyes alone is often a black box to a model.
Most business websites were built for none of this. They were built to look nice and maybe rank on Google five years ago. To an AI assistant, they are hard to read and easy to skip.
What This Means for Your Business
1. Audit how an AI actually reads your site, today. You can rank fine on Google and still be invisible to Siri AI, ChatGPT, and Gemini. These are different systems with different rules. The first move is finding out what the models see when they look at you, because right now most owners have no idea.
2. Treat structured data as infrastructure, not a plugin. Schema markup, clean JSON-LD, and machine-readable service pages are now the foundation of being recommendable. This is engineering work, not a marketing checkbox. Done right, it is the difference between being the answer and being skipped.
3. Move before your competitors do. AI search is consolidating fast. In the B2B referral data, Claude alone jumped from 1.4% to 18.5% of AI referrals in months. The assistants are picking their trusted sources now. The businesses that get optimized early get baked into the recommendations. The ones that wait are training the AI to recommend someone else.
The Takeaway
Apple just handed an AI assistant to every iPhone owner and told it to answer questions about local businesses. The only question that matters is whether that answer includes you. Traditional SEO got you ranked. AI search visibility gets you recommended. They are not the same game, and the second one started this week.
